Functional outdoor clothing is made of chemical fibers for the most part - only with them the development of new functional properties is possible. The big drawbacks in the production of synthetic clothing are the high consumption of energy, the high CO² emissions and the high consumption of crude oil, a limited and valuable resource. Also the disposal is difficult because synthetic materials do not decay.

Outdoor clothing made from recycled or recyclable polyester materials is an environmentally friendly alternative. Recycled polyester for clothing is mostly made of PET bottles, which are not refillable any longer. They are melted, drawn into threads, then are woven into fibers and processed into new clothing. This is a smart possibility to find a new use for plastic waste and it protects the natural resources.
The purchase of recyclable outdoor clothing goes one step further: The idea here is a closed loop, as we know it from waste paper and glass. It means that worn functional clothing made of polyester will become a new garment again and again. Some outdoor manufacturers have developed their own return systems: Customers can give back the worn garments directly to the manufacturer. So these worn clothes are returned to the production circle and provide the basis for the production of new outdoor garments.

The recycling of textiles contributes extensively to the minimization of the ecological footprint and thus to sustainability. In addition to the enormous savings in energy, pollutant emissions are prevented and crude oil and water consumption is minimized. Last but not least, recycling produces less waste.
