What is 1% for the Planet?

1% for the Planet is an organization founded in 2002 by Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies. With 1% for the Planet, they want to encourage companies and individuals to make a positive contribution to the preservation and protection of our planet and the environment.

Who participates in 1% for the Planet?

Whether an individual or a company, anyone can become a member. Companies such as Patagonia and Klean Kanteen can participate with a product, a brand or as a company as a whole. They donate at least 1 percent of their annual gross income to audited environmental protection associations. Individuals can apply for membership and donate 1 percent of their gross annual income to a certified environmental institution. Since this is not always possible, the alternative is to donate the entire amount to an environmental protection organisation, either predominantly or entirely on a voluntary basis. A My-Planet Pass can also be purchased as a further contribution. The turnover also benefits selected organisations and in addition the members receive benefits from 1% for the Planet partners. The members do not only invest their time for a good cause, but also get the opportunity to participate in the network, which has been growing steadily since its foundation. They receive information and are inspired to live sustainably and with foresight.

Who is supported?

1 % for the Planet divides the organisations to be supported into six areas:

Climate: The focus is on climate change and threats to the environment.
Food: The main focus is on supporting organisations that advocate an ecological and social food culture.
Land and nature: The conservation and protection of land, nature and the land rights of indigenous peoples is supported.
Pollution: The pollution of the air by carbon emissions is pointed out.
Water: The quality of the water should be restored and maintained
Wildlife and wildlife: The natural species of wild animals should be protected.
