Hemp and linen

Hemp - Excellent (raw) substance with great qualities and lasting effect

One of the most frugal, versatile and widespread Utility plants is the Hemp. This extremely robust annual plant is particularly environmentally friendly, because it needs significantly less water than cotton and produces a multiple of plant fibers for textile production. In addition, hemp does not need fertilizers or pesticides. Insects do not like the special substances of the plant, the cannabinoids, and so the cannabis protects itself perfectly against pests. The hemp plant is by nature very resistant and grows fast and almost everywhere. Even after the harvest, it still does good, because cannabis leaves behind an ideal, nutrient-rich soil from which following cultivated plants benefit.

Seriously - Linen has the home advantage

The cultivation and use of linen is also very environmentally friendly. Although the plant does not manage completely without fertilizers or pesticides, it needs about five times less chemical additives than cotton. Linen also grows in our country and before the cheaper cotton came into fashion, Germany was even one of the main growing areas. In addition, linen is an effective carbon well, one hectare of flax stores about 3.7 tons of CO² per year. In addition, the flax plant is processed into linen fibre purely mechanical - without the addition of chemicals.

Robust, breathable and very durable - advantages of natural fibres

Hemp and linen are bast fibres and, in addition to their woody components inside the stem, contain long tear-resistant fibres which run along the stem. They consist mainly of cellulose and are structurally similar to cotton fibres.

Dress, trousers, tank top or blouse - linen and hemp clothing are real all-rounders. In contrast to earlier times, when linen clothing was mainly white and starched, today people appreciate its casual, nobly wrinkled look in soft colours. Hemp clothing and linen offer some environment- and skin-friendly advantages, which we have compiled for you below:

  • robust, long-life and tear-resistant
  • good suitable for allergy sufferers
  • soiling repellent and lint-free
  • antibacterial and antistatic
  • moisture regulating (linen fibre can absorb up to 20 percent of its weight in moisture and release it back into the air, keeping it cool and dry feel)
  • cooling wearing comfort
  • breathable by the natural structure of the fabric
  • odour-inhibiting
  • Hanfkleidung offers high protection against UV rays
  • Linen becomes more beautiful and softer with age, does not wash out

Good for the environment and perfect for the summer

Hemp and linen are mainly used in the production of light Summerwear, as the natural fibres offer a cooling wearing comfort due to the excellent moisture regulation. The natural structure also makes them very breathable and creates a pleasant feeling on your skin. Due to the antibacterial properties, hemp clothing and linen dresses made of natural fibres are also wonderfully suitable for allergy sufferers. Thanks to their insensitivity to bacteria and fungi, these clothes have an anti-allergenic and soothing effect on sensitive skin.

The classic is the linen dress for the summer. But the range of linen and hemp clothing does not end there. Whether jeans, shirt, leisure trousers, tunic, T-shirt, blouse, skirt or scarf. Even shoes, stockings, underwear and light casual jackets are part of the assortment.

His Variety shows hemp also in the production of garments or bags. From light summer shorts, skin-friendly socks and pullovers to outdoor hats, weatherproof jackets and robust bags, the Hanfmode knows hardly any limits. Many manufacturers prefer to use hemp fibres in combination with organic cotton and linen.

How does the plant become an organic summer dress?

hemp and linen lift a long, time consuming manufacturing process until the clothing hangs as shirt, dress or trousers in your wardrobe. For fibre production the plants are harvested, roasted and dried. Roasting is similar to a controlled rotting process and is done by the so-called Water or Dewroast. Here, the cut stems are placed in water along their entire length and in parallel bundles or left on the field floor, where the decomposition process takes place with the aid of dew moisture. The watering of the plant bundles serves the solution of the binding agents, which connect fibre bundles with wood and bark. The roasting is followed by drying. The roast with subsequent drying of the stems is repeated several times and takes some time.

In the next step the dried hemp or flax tufts are broken. The stems are bent as often as necessary until the wooden shives trickle out. After crushing, a second working step, swinging, is carried out, in which the fibres are freed from wood residues and further cleaned and refined depending on the intended use. In order to obtain linen fibres a further manufacturing step takes place, the "Hecheln". The term "pimples" is used to describe the combing of the bast fibres into spinnable fibre bundles, whereby the last wood particles and short fibres are removed at the same time.

>This is how the natural fibres are removed from the stalk in a particularly labour-intensive, mechanical process, so that they can then be spun into a yarn. The yarn obtained is then turned into the great hard-wearing fabrics from which the environmentally friendly and durable clothing is made.

5 good reasons for clothing made of hemp and linen

The durable and especially skin-friendly and hard-wearing clothing made of linen and hemp will be a faithful companion for all your life situations. Because also when washing and caring for these robust clothes there are no problems.

Hemp clothing or mixed hemp fabrics are easy to care for. The basic rule here is to ventilate material well and wash less . If you wash hemp or linen, then follow the washing instructions on the label. Otherwise, coloured hemp clothing can best be washed with eco washing powder at 30°. Linen can, however, also be washed in the machine at higher temperatures without any problems if you have to deal with stubborn dirt. A little tip: Do not put in the dryer, as the material creases more there and the energy can be saved anyway. The job can also be done by the sun.

  1. hemp and linen is a natural, fast-growing resource and converts sunlight, water and nutrients particularly effectively and beneficially into plant fibres. Both substances are very resistant and hemp can be cultivated completely without additives such as fertilizers and pesticides, linen needs only a small part of the means.
  2. The cultivation of hemp and linen yields up to three times more plant fibres than that of cotton on a surface of the same size.
  3. Use hemp supplies not only fibres for textiles, building materials and paper, but also hemp seed, which can be processed into various foodstuffs or pressed into oil.
  4. Hemp is three times as tear-resistant as cotton and therefore one of the most tear-resistant natural fibres ever. Clothing made of hemp and linen offers high wearing comfort and has antistatic, temperature balancing, antibacterial and moisture regulating properties.
  5. Hemp and linen are natural fibres biodegradable. Anyone who makes sure at the time of purchase that clothing is produced in a fair and sustainable manner and without chemical additives or paints protects the environment!
