What is the Down Codex?

The Down Cotex was initiated in 2009 by Mountain Equipment in cooperation with the International Down and Feather Laboratory (IDFL), an independent, world-wide established audit and inspection laboratory. Its goal was initially to monitor and improve the conditions under which down products for Mountain Equipment are being produced. Strict guidelines and requirements have been set up and met during every step of the down supply chain:

Life plucking and moulting plucking are prohibited.
The used down must be a by-product of the food industry.
There is no forced fattening.
The animals live under species-appropriate conditions.

The down is also cleaned and sorted immediately after harvesting, entirely without the use of solvents. In addition, every batch of down used in Mountain Equipment products is tested—for example, by the IDFL—for cleanliness, composition, and fill power.

The “Down Codex” project was therefore developed to enable even better control not only over the quality of their down but also over its origin. Mountain Equipment is thus placing greater emphasis on important aspects such as sustainability, animal welfare, and its own ethical responsibility as a company.

Another goal of the Down Codex is to present the complexity of the down supply chain in a way that is understandable and, above all, transparent.
As part of this effort, all down products have been labeled with a 12-digit numerical code since the summer of 2012. Using this code, the down’s supply chain can be traced on the Down Codex website. Furthermore, when owners enter their code, they receive a complete, independent animal welfare report from the IDFL regarding the down used.

Audits

Since 2022, the Down Codex has been certified by the RDS (Responsible Down Standard).

All breeding and mother animal farms, slaughterhouses, distributors, and processing facilities throughout the entire supply chain must undergo strict inspections (audits). The audits are conducted annually through on-site visits, document reviews, records, photographs, and face-to-face interviews.
