The microfiber pollution of the oceans
Two passionate surfers, their love towards nature and a tea filter - that's how the story of the Guppyfriend begins. Alexander Nolte and Oliver Spies are co-founders of the company Langbrett, an association of surfers, skaters and nature lovers that produces sustainable clothing for the outdoor sector. The tea filter came into play out of curiosity: with its help Alexander and Oliver wanted to determine what is washed out of synthetic fiber clothing. In addition to the ordinary dirt they found microfibers. An alarming number of tiny fibers from synthetic fabrics are making their way from washing machine into rivers and oceans. Unfortunately, sewage treatment plants cannot effectively filter these microfibers. According to a research team from the University of California a city of 100,000 inhabitants releases a wash-related volume of microfibers equivalent to 15,000 plastic bags.

A smart wash bag against microfiber pollution
To reduce microfibers ending up in the oceans, Alexander and Oliver founded the nonprofit organization Stop! Micro Waste located in Berlin. "Stop! Micro Waste is dedicated to inform about smart use of plastic. It aims to explore and initiate great ideas on how to avoid, replace and re-use plastics in every day life and beyond." One solution of this organisation to reduce the microfibers in the oceans is the Guppyfriend wash bag. It filters out the tiniest microfibers that are released from textiles during washing. The fabric bag made of a specially-designed microfilter material captures the microfibers that break during washing. The fibers are trapped inside the bag after each wash and can be simply disposed in the trash. In the process, Guppyfriend draws attention to the microfiber pollution and helps fight the problem.
