Down Codex
Mountain Equipment only uses the highest quality down. The down is obtained from various sources. Any down that Mountain Equipment uses is a by-product of food production and is only obtained after the animals have been killed in an ethically correct manner. Live plucking and harvesting (moulting) of live birds are absolutely excluded. The animals are not force-fed and they live in species-appropriate conditions. They have enough space to move freely in a natural environment and find shelter. They have access to fresh water and natural food. The number of animals per square meter is below the recommended maximum number. After the down has been obtained, it is cleaned and sorted - this is done using water-based methods without the use of solvents. Every batch of down that Mountain Equipment uses is tested for cleanliness, composition and fill power. The IDFL provides this service for Mountain Equipment. All information on fill power is determined using the IDFB/Lorch cylinder method.

Responsible Down Standard (R.D.S)
The Responsible Down Standard (RDS) ensures that down and feathers come from ducks and geese that have been treated well. This means enabling them to live healthy lives, express innate behaviours, and not suffer from pain, fear or distress. The standard also follows the chain of custody from farm to product, so consumers can be confident that the down and feathers in the products they choose are truly RDS.
