Save the Arctic Fox
The arctic fox is in acute danger of extinction across Europe. Over-hunting for its fur in the 1900s decreased the arctic fox population dramatically and it became a protected species in Sweden in 1928 and in Norway in 1930. Long periods without sufficient access to food, in particular small rodents such as the lemming, and competition from the red fox are the primary reasons why the population has had difficulty recovering. Today it is estimated that there are around 130-150 adult arctic fox in Scandinavia; a robust species requires at least 500 adults.
Fjällräven joined forces with arctic fox expert Angerbjörn from the Stockholm University in the early 1990s to ensure that more trekkers would have the opportunity to run across a curious arctic fox in the mountains. They donate money for research and to supplement the food supply, and they help disseminate information. For each product sold from their "Save the Arctic Fox" collection, Fjällräven donates SEK 50 to arctic fox research. Fjällräven hopes that this and future donations will improve the chances of the arctic fox to survive.
